Our School:

Gibson Elementary is a vibrant, multicultural school community where students and families represent a wide range of cultural backgrounds, languages, and lived experiences. Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and we work intentionally to create a welcoming environment where every family feels seen, valued, and connected. We embrace cultural learning throughout the year by acknowledging, learning about and celebrating traditions from many communities, integrating diverse perspectives into classroom learning, and building strong relationships with families. This commitment supports a school culture grounded in respect, belonging, and shared pride in who we are as a community.

What classroom and school wide practices are needed to reduce disruptive behaviours and increase student engagement, attendance and academic growth?

Key Actions To Date:

-COI focus on class wide systems within grade levels to support student
engagement​
-Programs used by teachers include: Everyday Speech and Be Good People to support
SEL in classrooms​
-Cohort assemblies that brought classes together to reinforce social responsibility and highlight positive behaviour practices
-School-Wide Yoga Sessions to develop regulation skills

Progress Update:

Staff continue to use SEL strategies to support student regulation, engagement, and belonging. There is also a growing recognition that staff need to strengthen and more consistently implement PBIS practices across classrooms and common spaces in order to create greater predictability for learners. As the school continues to see improvements in student regulation and behaviour, there will also be a growing focus next year on improving literacy outcomes, particularly in reading.
